It is probably dead as a mobile technology but has life as a fixed tech. Here is an interesting blog post from me from 2007 on WiMax from my other writings.
A 32-bit processor can only handle access to up-to 4GB of memory, a 64-bit processor can handle much more of course. However, Apple's new 64-bit chip in iPhone 5s only has 1GB of RAM -- so being able to process data from more than 4GB of memory is essentially not helping much. It will likely make a difference in the company's iPads before it matters much in the iPhone as they possess much more processing power and memory. This move is actually a part of a larger strategy from Apple to position its mobile operating system.
